India has officially raised concerns with the Australian government regarding the recent hike in international student visa fees, which took effect on 1 July 2024. The new fee, which has more than doubled from AUD 710 to AUD 1,600, is part of Australia’s broader strategy to control migration.

Kirti Vardhan Singh, India’s Minister of State for External Affairs, confirmed in Parliament that the matter had been addressed with Australian authorities. Singh highlighted the financial challenges the fee increase could pose to Indian students wishing to study in Australia. He stated, “The hike in visa fees is expected to pose financial challenges to international students, including those from India, intending to pursue their studies in Australia.”

This significant fee rise is part of a series of measures to manage migration flows to Australia. The Minister assured that the Indian government continues to engage with Australian authorities on issues affecting Indian students, a key area in the bilateral relationship between the two nations.

In November 2023, Australia unveiled its education strategy for India, titled A Partnership for the Future. During his visit to India, Australian Minister for Education Jason Clare emphasised the importance of strengthening education ties, noting that international education is not just about students coming to Australia but also about Australian universities expanding their reach globally.

The fee hike is expected to have a significant impact on students from India, who make up a large portion of the international student community in Australia. Both governments continue to work on fostering stronger academic and economic ties, despite these challenges.
