Brown University in the USA has announced a series of initiatives to maintain and enhance diversity within its student body. The plan focuses on recruitment, matriculation and retention, ensuring students from diverse backgrounds have access to resources and support to thrive at Brown.

Interim Vice President for Institutional Equity and Diversity, Patricia Poitevien, and University Provost, Francis J. Doyle III, shared the details of the plan with the Brown community. Their announcement follows the U.S. Supreme Court decision that limited race-based considerations in university admissions.

‘Brown remains committed to complying with the law while fostering a diverse and inclusive community as integral to our mission of academic excellence,’ Poitevien and Doyle stated. They emphasised that the initiatives aim to attract a robust pool of highly qualified, diverse students who can contribute to Brown University’s academic mission.

The plan will be evaluated annually to measure its impact on the admissions process. Poitevien and Doyle underscored that success will depend on strengthening the admission pipeline, from recruitment to enrolment. They aim to boost confidence among prospective students, families and counsellors in Brown’s dedication to diversity.

The initiatives also prioritise securing support from donors to sustain outreach efforts. These efforts will focus on historically underrepresented student populations while increasing awareness of Brown’s holistic and mission-driven admissions process. The university hopes to enhance its yield of admitted students from varied backgrounds.

‘This will be a years-long effort as we contend with an evolving admissions environment nationwide,’ the officials added.

By continuing to adapt to changing circumstances, Brown University reaffirms its long-term commitment to diversity, inclusivity and academic excellence.
