According to the Education Ministry, the number of Indian students pursuing education abroad has risen dramatically by 52.2% over the past five years, reaching 892,989 in 2023. The United States is the top destination, hosting 234,473 Indian students, followed closely by Canada with 233,532, and the United Kingdom with 136,921.

This trend marks a steady increase since 2019, except for a sharp dip in 2020 due to COVID-19 travel restrictions, which caused a 55.7% decline in overseas enrolments. The pandemic prompted institutions worldwide to temporarily shift to online learning, disrupting international education.

Minister of State for Education Sukanta Majumdar, responding to queries in the Rajya Sabha, clarified that the Education Ministry does not maintain comprehensive statistics on Indian students abroad. However, data from the Bureau of Immigration indicates a consistent rise in Indians travelling overseas for education since 2019.

Among the top destinations, Canada recorded a 76% growth in Indian student enrolments, from 132,620 in 2019 to 233,532 in 2023, despite recent diplomatic tensions between the two countries.
The number of Indian students in the United States surged by 91%, from 122,535 in 2019 to 234,473 in 2023.

The most significant growth was observed in the United Kingdom, where Indian student enrolments soared by 273.9%, rising from 36,612 in 2019 to 136,921 in 2023.

This substantial growth underscores the increasing appeal of international education among Indian students, with the US, Canada, and the UK emerging as the preferred destinations. The data highlights Indian students’ global mobility and their contribution to these nations’ education sectors.
