Thirteen undergraduate students from The University of Western Australia (UWA) have been named 2025 New Colombo Plan Scholars. They are among 219 recipients from 33 Australian universities selected to undertake language training, study, and internships in Indo-Pacific locations next year.
The Australian Government grants this prestigious scholarship to enhance students’ engagement with the Indo-Pacific region and deepen their understanding of its culture, language, and economy. UWA Vice-Chancellor Professor Amit Chakma highlighted the initiative’s significance, stating: “These scholarships represent an extraordinary opportunity for our students to develop critical international skills and build deep, meaningful connections across the Indo-Pacific.”

The selected students represent a diverse range of disciplines, including commerce, philosophy, science, and biomedicine. Recipients such as Anh (Annabel) Nguyen, who is studying for a Bachelor of Arts and Modern Languages, and Finn Lip, who is pursuing a Bachelor of Philosophy, expressed excitement about the opportunity. Nguyen plans to refine her Chinese language skills in a trilingual city, while Lip looks forward to contributing to advancements in AI-powered healthcare in the region.

Continuing a Legacy at UWA
In a separate milestone, UWA medical student Henry Pemberton became the third generation of his family to earn a medical degree from the institution. The tradition began with his grandfather, Professor Colin Binns, who fondly recalled his time at UWA and his impactful experiences in Papua New Guinea.

The success of the New Colombo Plan and UWA’s graduates highlights Australia’s commitment to fostering global skills and international collaboration, strengthening ties across the Indo-Pacific.
