India has reported a 23 percent drop in students seeking education in the UK despite them constituting the largest foreign student group who have been given permission to work in Britain for two years under a Graduate Route visa after the completion of their studies, said the Home Office, UK.

The data also revealed from the past year until June 2024, indicating that although Indians may continue to top the list of student visa grants, they are starting to be deterred from applying for UK universities due to higher migration cuts.

This is the first indication of a drop in the number of Indian students, as most student visa holders lost their ability to bring dependents with them earlier this year.

The use of UK Home Office statistics also shows that there is a sponsorship of study visa grants to the main applicant who is a national of India in the monitored year, which ended June 2024 at 25% or 110,006, which is 32,687 less than the previous year. It also stated that between 2019 and 2023, Indians and Nigerians saw an improvement in the number of international students in the country, but as per the latest numbers, there was a decline of 23 percent for Indians and 43 percent for Nigerian students.

The India-UK Young Professionals Scheme, which has a 2-year resident-working program in either country and is just below the visa limit of 3,000 per year, has admitted 2,234 Indian nationals to the UK since the first ballot in February of the previous year.

The overall leave to remain in the year up to June 2024 by the Indian students topped at 67,529, making it 46% of the grants of Graduate Route extensions to the main applicants. This yearly reduction might pose a huge problem to the universities in the UK as they are financially challenged while at the same time relying more on international students who are charged higher fees than their regional counterparts.
