Myrtle Beach, South Carolina – A $40 million housing development is underway to address seasonal housing shortages for international students in Myrtle Beach. The project on Mr. Joe White Avenue aims to support the city’s tourism-driven economy, where international students play a vital role.

The first phase of the project, expected to be completed by April 2025, will include two buildings with 360 beds each. Once fully developed, the complex will feature five buildings accommodating up to 1,572 students.

International students contribute significantly to Myrtle Beach’s tourism sector, comprising 4% of the workforce annually. These students often fill key roles in hotels, restaurants, and attractions, especially during peak and off-peak seasons. However, a lack of affordable housing has posed challenges for students and employers.

President of Lazarus Entertainment Group, Mark Lazarus praised the project as crucial for the local economy, addressing misconceptions about international students replacing local workers. “They fill a void when we need them most,” Lazarus said, highlighting the students’ importance during transitional seasons.

Designed to foster community and safety, the complex will feature bunk-bed rooms, private bathrooms, kitchenettes, and common areas with recreational spaces and high-speed internet. Security measures include RFID access, live video monitoring, and 24/7 on-site staff.

Myrtle Beach leaders believe the project will enhance the city’s appeal to international students, boosting workforce reliability during tourist seasons. Its central location near major attractions like Broadway at the Beach and access to public transport adds to its benefits.

The project reflects the broader impact of international students across the U.S., who contributed $43.8 billion to the economy in 2023-24, according to NAFSA. With record-high enrolments, initiatives like this underscore their value to education and local economies.
