The British Academy’s Visiting Fellowships scheme offers invited scholars, affiliated with a university or research institute in any country worldwide, the opportunity to undertake their fellowship at a university or other higher education institution in the United Kingdom. There are no restrictions regarding the career stage or discipline of academics wishing to participate in the programme, which is open to those in the humanities and social sciences.
The Visiting Fellowships are available for periods of three to six months. As part of the application process, applicants will be asked to indicate their preferred start date for the fellowship, which should fall within the spring and summer (March-August 2025).
The maximum available funding is £40,000.
Eligibility criteria
To be eligible for the fellowships, the following criteria must be met:

  • Applicants for Visiting Fellow positions must be at post-doctoral level or above, or possess equivalent research experience, at the time of application.
  • Applicants should not be residents of the United Kingdom when applying for the fellowship. In terms of employment status, applicants can be permanent or fixed-term employees, provided that their contracts do not end before the Visiting Fellowship concludes. Independent scholars are also welcome to apply.
  • Applicants must provide proof of communication with their host institution in the United Kingdom before applying for the fellowship. Please note that the British Academy cannot assist in identifying or arranging introductions to host institutions in the UK.
