In an exciting move, Arizona State University (ASU), United States is offering an enriching study abroad experience to first-year students of Barrett, The Honors College. Around 20 students are currently spending their second semester in Rome, Italy, as part of the Barrett Global Honors Flex programme. The initiative allows students to earn half of their honours credits while immersing themselves in Italian culture and history.

This unique opportunity is designed to foster personal growth and academic development. Students are accompanied by Barrett faculty member, Joseph Foy, who is teaching nine of the total 15 credits. The programme has already proven to be transformative for many students.

Violet Lenz, a film major at the Sidney Poitier New American Film School, shared her thoughts on the experience. “I’ve learned that I can do a lot more than I think I can. It’s easier to figure things out than it seems. It’s helped me grow so much as a person, boosting my confidence and expanding my worldview.”

The students are taking courses that connect their studies to the rich historical and cultural heritage of Italy. Joana Cano, a sports journalism major, found the experience particularly enriching. “I’ve learned a lot about the Italian perspective on journalism, and it’s been cool to explore the global side of journalism, especially as I dream of covering the FIFA World Cup one day,” she said.

Senior Director of Barrett’s Office of Global Initiatives, Jason Briggs, emphasised the program’s aim to give students an early chance to develop global perspectives. “The goal is to provide honours students with a transformative experience by living and studying abroad, in their very first year at Barrett,” he said.

For many students, the programme is more than just academic; it’s about becoming independent and adapting to a new way of life in one of the world’s most historic cities.
