Australia and the United States have surpassed Canada as the top choices for international students seeking higher education, according to a recent survey by IDP Education’s Emerging Futures. Conducted between August and September 2024, the survey gathered responses from over 6,000 participants across 114 countries, revealing that evolving diplomatic ties and policy changes are influencing students’ decisions on where to pursue their studies.

The findings underscore a growing trend: 66% of prospective students are now considering multiple destinations for their international qualifications, reflecting a cautious approach amid global uncertainties. The survey indicates that financial concerns such as rising tuition fees, living costs, and visa charges are among the primary factors discouraging students from studying abroad. Almost half (47%) of respondents are reconsidering their global study plans over the next two years.

The shift in preference towards Australia and the United States highlights how students are adapting to these challenges, exploring alternative destinations that offer greater clarity and stability in their policies. With many students and parents seeking more informed, flexible options, the international education landscape is witnessing a significant transformation in student priorities and choices.
