Under the Australian Government’s Trailblazer Universities Program, a new partnership worth $45 million has been established between Australian universities and CSIRO, Australia’s national science agency. The collaboration aims to advance precise manufacturing capabilities, strengthening Australia’s manufacturing sector and fostering innovation in key industries.

Assistant Minister for Education, Senator Anthony Chisholm, highlighted the program’s potential: “Developing Australia’s sovereign capability will make our manufacturing more sustainable and will create new job opportunities for the industries of tomorrow.” He also emphasised the government’s focus on boosting local economies and encouraging innovation through university partnerships.

The partnership will provide universities access to CSIRO’s cutting-edge Lab22, a centre for metallic additive manufacturing. This facility houses advanced equipment, such as the PX100 Digital Metal Binder Jet System, designed for high-volume metal production, and the Nikon SLM-280 2MA Laser Powder Bed Fusion system, which aids in space mission components. The Defence Trailblazer’s Robotic Additive Manufacturing Cell also supports large-format 3D printing for space and defence applications.

The $45 million investment is part of a broader $370.3 million initiative, which supports six national priority areas in manufacturing, including defence, critical minerals, space, food, waste recycling, and renewables. Over the next four years, Australian universities will be pivotal in driving research commercialisation and fostering innovation across these sectors.
