Canadian authorities have identified more than 10,000 fraudulent student acceptance letters in 2024, according to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). This revelation highlights the growing issue of fake documentation among international student applications.

The discovery follows stricter verification measures introduced after a deportation scandal last year involving international students. Many of these students, primarily from India, were found to have unknowingly submitted fake acceptance letters provided by unlicensed immigration consultants during their study permit applications.

Bronwyn May, director-general of the International Students Branch at IRCC, informed Members of Parliament that, over the past year, 93 percent of the 500,000 acceptance letters reviewed were verified as authentic. However, two percent were found to be fraudulent, and some institutions either cancelled students’ places or failed to confirm the letters’ authenticity.

According to a report by The Globe and Mail, Ottawa investigated 2,000 suspicious cases in 2023, focusing on students from India, China, and Vietnam. Approximately 1,485 of these cases involved bogus documents supplied by overseas immigration consultants. While many were refused entry to Canada, some had already entered the country.

Canada’s stringent measures are part of broader efforts to uphold the integrity of its immigration system, especially given its reputation as a top destination for international students. These developments emphasise the importance of verifying documents and choosing authorised immigration consultants for study abroad applications.
