The Ministry of External Affairs has revealed that over 1.335 million students are currently pursuing higher studies abroad in response to queries about the impact on students studying internationally.

“Indian Missions and Posts abroad regularly interact with prospective and registered Indian students studying in other countries. They encourage students to register with them or on the Global Rishta Portal. These missions welcome and orient newly arriving Indian students to various security situations in their host countries through ‘Welcome to Foreign Land’ ceremonies. They also urge students to stay in touch and register with the Indian Missions or Posts. This method helps gather voluntary data on Indian students abroad. Additionally, Indian Missions and Posts liaise with relevant departments of host governments to provide data on the growth of overseas education for Indian students,” stated Kirti Vardhan Singh, Minister of State in the Ministry of External Affairs.

According to statistics from the Ministry of External Affairs, 1,335,878 students were studying at foreign universities in 2024, up from 1,318,955 in 2023.

The data shows an increase in the number of students studying abroad compared to pre-COVID numbers. In 2019, 675,541 students went abroad for higher studies. However, the number declined in 2022 to 907,404, compared to 1,158,702 students who enrolled in 2021.

Among the most popular destinations for Indian students are Canada, the USA, the UK, Australia, and Germany. According to GOI data, 427,000 students chose Canada as their preferred study destination, 337,630 opted for the USA, 18,500 went to the UK, 122,202 selected Australia, and 42,997 chose Germany.
