Canada has introduced new requirements for the Post Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) programme, effective from November 1. These updates focus on language proficiency and field-of-study criteria, impacting international students seeking to work in Canada post-graduation.

Under the updated rules, applicants must now demonstrate language proficiency through recognised tests. English speakers must meet Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB), while French speakers will adhere to Niveaux de Compétence Linguistique Canadien (NCLC). Accepted English tests include CELPIP, IELTS, and PTE Core, with results required to be recent (within the last two years).
Additionally, the new rules introduce field-of-study requirements. Students must ensure their programme aligns with one of Canada’s priority sectors: Agriculture and Agri-food, Healthcare, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), Trades, and Transport. These changes aim to address labour shortages in critical industries, ensuring graduates are prepared for in-demand roles.

Despite these adjustments, the general eligibility criteria for the PGWP remain unchanged. Applicants must complete their studies at a designated learning institution (DLI), maintain full-time student status, and apply for the PGWP within 180 days of completing their studies.

These revisions reflect Canada’s efforts to align the PGWP programme with the needs of the labour market, ensuring graduates are ready to contribute to sectors facing long-term demand. International students interested in staying in Canada should ensure their programmes meet these new standards.
