Canada has announced a new policy allowing eligible international students to work up to 24 hours per week off-campus without a work permit. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) confirmed that this initiative aims to provide students with greater flexibility and support during their academic journey.

This change comes amid several immigration policy updates, including modifications to the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) programme and a crackdown on the Student Direct Stream (SDS) scheme. However, the new work rule is expected to be a positive development for international students, particularly those from India, who form one of the largest groups studying in Canada.

To be eligible for this off-campus work option, students must be enrolled in a full-time programme at a designated learning institution (DLI), with a study programme lasting at least six months. They must also have a Social Insurance Number (SIN) and may begin working only after their programme starts. Importantly, students are allowed to work during regular semesters but can work unlimited hours during scheduled breaks.

Certain students are excluded from this opportunity, including those enrolled solely in English as a Second Language (ESL) or French as a Second Language (FSL) programmes, or general interest courses, as well as those whose study permits restrict off-campus work.

Indian students, who have experienced a slight decline in study permits in 2024, are expected to benefit significantly from this policy, helping them manage finances while pursuing their education in Canada.
