The Canadian Government has pledged to spend millions of dollars to assist official language minority communities within a five-year timeframe.

This funding, provided through bilateral agreements with provincial and territorial governments, forms part of the federal government’s Action Plan for Official Languages 2023-2028. One of the key objectives of this plan is to support minority language postsecondary institutions and strengthen the bilingual workforce across the country.

“All Canadians, wherever they live in this great country, can count on the services they expect and demand. Our investment today will pave the way to ensure that their confidence in us is well-placed, and that we are ready to support the OLMCs and all official language minority communities across Canada,” said Randy Boissonnault, Minister of Employment, Workforce Development, and Official Languages.

Although the act primarily addresses the declining importance of the French language in Canada, OLMCs (Official Language Minority Communities) refer to individuals whose first language is not the majority language in their province or territory, such as English-speaking residents of Quebec.

As part of the government’s Action Plan, up to $128 million is set to be allocated over four years to address the underfunding of postsecondary institutions and to support the development of a bilingual professional workforce.
