Germany has hit a record high in international student enrolment, with nearly 380,000 students from around the world studying at German universities during the 2023/24 autumn semester, according to new data from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). This marks a 3% increase from the previous year, reflecting Germany’s continued appeal as a global education hub.

Among these students, around 114,700 were first-year students, setting another milestone for Germany’s academic sector. The growth is attributed to the rise in English-taught master’s and PhD programmes, which have helped attract a wider international audience. Although English-language undergraduate courses remain limited, the availability of these programmes at higher education levels has contributed significantly to Germany’s appeal.

DAAD’s Secretary General Kai Sicks highlighted the importance of Germany’s welcoming approach, which combines English-language programmes with opportunities to learn German. This dual approach aims to enhance students’ academic experience and societal integration.

The surge in international students is boosting diversity and helping to address Germany’s skilled labour shortages. DAAD President Prof. Dr. Joybrato Mukherjee emphasised that Germany’s rising numbers underscore its status as a leading destination for international students and researchers, particularly in fields that can meet the nation’s demand for skilled professionals.
