A recent survey by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) reveals that German universities are experiencing a steady or rising influx of international students. According to the report, the country now hosts over 400,000 international students, with nearly 90,000 first-semester students enrolling this academic year.

The DAAD survey, involving 200 universities across Germany, showed that 90% of institutions reported stable or growing numbers of foreign students. Over a third of these universities noted a sharp increase, with new enrolments rising by 10% or more, while only 10% of universities reported a decline.

DAAD President Prof. Dr Joybrato Mukherjee emphasised the global appeal of German education, stating, “German universities are demonstrably very attractive for international students. In times of an increasingly noticeable shortage of skilled workers, we must create career prospects for young people who study here.”

However, the survey also highlighted challenges faced by international students. Eighty-three percent of universities reported difficulties with visa allocation and entry policies, 75% cited a lack of affordable housing, and 69% noted concerns about the cost of living and studying.

The DAAD called for urgent action to address these hurdles. “We need more affordable accommodation for students, both domestic and international, to ensure the continued success of Germany as a hub for business and innovation,” Mukherjee added.

Germany’s sustained growth in international enrolments underscores its increasing importance as a destination for global education, despite challenges that require immediate attention to maintain its appeal.
