Indian students are increasingly choosing to study agriculture abroad, driven by the global demand for sustainable farming practices and technological advancements. This trend is apparent in both rural and urban areas across India, with students enrolling in programmes such as agronomy, agri-tech, food sciences, and more. Countries like Canada, the United States, and Australia have emerged as popular destinations, offering specialised agriculture courses with a strong emphasis on sustainability and innovation.

Nikhil Jain, co-founder of ForeignAdmits, reported a sharp rise in interest, noting a 75% increase in agriculture-related course enquiries in 2023. He attributed this surge to global initiatives such as the EU’s “Farm to Fork” strategy and Canada’s Agri-Food Pilot, which have increased demand for expertise in advanced agricultural practices. Additionally, Canada’s pathways to permanent residency for those with agricultural skills have been a significant draw for Indian students.

The demand for these programmes is no longer limited to traditional agricultural regions. Akshay Chaturvedi of Leverage.biz highlighted a notable shift, with students from tier-2 and tier-3 cities, such as Meerut and Nagpur, now applying in large numbers. Engineering graduates and young professionals from diverse backgrounds are also showing growing interest in agri-tech and sustainable farming courses.

Experts like Adarsh Khandelwal of Collegify believe India’s agricultural transformation stands to benefit from these students, many of whom aspire to return and apply cutting-edge skills in precision agriculture, IoT, and AI to advance the nation’s farming sector.
