India continues to lead as a top source country for Germany’s international academic community, with nearly 49,000 Indian students and 6,700 researchers currently enrolled at German universities, according to the latest Wissenschaft weltoffen report by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Germany, now home to over 75,000 international researchers and almost 380,000 students, has become a major hub for global academic talent, ranking just behind the United States as a destination for international academics.

DAAD President Prof. Dr. Joybrato Mukherjee highlighted Germany’s appeal as a magnet for students and scholars, with the increasing availability of English-language programmes making German universities more accessible. The data shows India leading as a top source country for both students and researchers, followed by China and Italy.

The number of international students in Germany grew by 3% in 2023-24, with international students now comprising nearly 13% of the total student population. With 114,700 first-year students from abroad enrolling in 2022, Germany continues to see record international interest.

As global student mobility rises, Germany’s commitment to supporting its international academic community remains essential. The DAAD report underscores the need for sustained investment in academic and integration support to maintain Germany’s strong position.

India’s contribution to Germany’s academic community underscores the strong educational ties between the two nations, solidifying Germany as a preferred destination for Indian students seeking quality higher education and research opportunities.
