Uzbekistan has emerged as a popular destination for Indian students pursuing higher education, with 5,733 Indians enrolled during the 2023–24 academic year, according to the Statistics Agency of the Republic of Uzbekistan. This makes Indian students the largest international group in the country’s universities.

Indian students are followed by those from Pakistan (1,358) and Turkmenistan (904). Other notable contributors include the Russian Federation (904), Kazakhstan (537), and Tajikistan and the Kyrgyz Republic, each with 285 students.

Data from India’s Ministry of External Affairs indicates that, as of January 2024, approximately 4,100 Indian students are pursuing higher education in Uzbekistan. The country has also attracted students from Afghanistan (196), China (182), Korea (176), and Canada (124), with various other nations contributing an additional 312 enrolments.

This surge reflects a broader trend of Indian students increasingly opting for international education. For instance, the United States recorded 3.31 lakh Indian students in the 2023–24 academic year, as per the Open Doors 2024 report, marking a 25.4% increase from the previous year. Similarly, the United Kingdom has reported a significant rise in Indian student enrolments.

Uzbekistan’s growing appeal lies in its affordable education and cultural proximity, offering Indian students diverse opportunities for academic and professional growth. These data underscore Uzbekistan’s evolving status as a key hub for global education, particularly for students from South Asia.
