The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has reassured Indian students that their applications will continue to be processed despite ongoing diplomatic tensions between India and Canada. As relations between the two countries sour following the expulsion of diplomats over the killing of Canadian-Sikh activist Harjinder Singh Nijjar, the IRCC remains committed to ensuring minimal disruption for Indian applicants.

Spokesperson Isabelle Dubois confirmed that applications from India will still be processed as usual, with over 90% of them being handled in Canada itself. She emphasised that all applications are assessed fairly and equally, with the country’s designated learning institutions continuing to welcome students from India.

While Canada remains home to over 400,000 Indian students, concerns have been rising about the impact of the strained diplomatic ties on visa and study permit approvals. There was a reported 50% drop in the approval rate for study permits from India in the first half of 2024 compared to the previous year. However, the IRCC maintains that the approval rate for study permits remains strong at 79%.

Indian students make up a significant portion of Canada’s international student community, contributing billions to the economy. Despite recent concerns, Canada continues to process applications and uphold its commitment to welcoming international students.
