The Maharashtra government, in collaboration with the British Council, has launched a new programme to advance the internationalisation of the state’s higher education institutions.

Under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Maharashtra’s Department of Higher and Technical Education and the UK-based organisation, the “Capacity Building for International Officers” programme will equip universities with the skills and tools to foster global academic collaborations effectively.

A cohort of 36 participants from 18 public and private universities in Maharashtra has been selected for the workshop. The initiative aligns with India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which aims to make the country a global hub for higher education by strengthening cross-border partnerships and raising institutional excellence.

The programme focuses on skill development and practical strategies to enhance the capabilities of international officers. The sessions will include specialised modules designed to ensure impactful outcomes that align with Maharashtra’s internationalisation goals.

Shri Vikas Chandra Rastogi, IAS, Principal Secretary for Higher and Technical Education, emphasised the initiative’s importance, stating: “This programme is a significant step toward modernising Indian higher education. It aligns with NEP 2020 and Maharashtra’s vision to improve the quality of education while fostering global connections.”

Rashi Jain, Director, West India, British Council, highlighted the initiative’s role in empowering universities to expand their global presence. She noted: “By providing international officers with the skills and expertise to enhance global engagement, we support India’s goal of becoming a global education hub.”

The British Council has collaborated with Indian states to promote education, cultural exchange, and innovation. Similar initiatives in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have underscored its commitment to empowering students, artists, and institutions across India.
