Malaysia is set to introduce a centralised system to streamline the admissions process for international students, as announced by the country’s Higher Education Minister, Datuk Seri Zambry Abdul Kadir. The changes, part of a broader transformation agenda, aim to standardise and authenticate qualifications submitted by international applicants.

The announcement was made during a speech at the University of Technology Malaysia in Skudai on January 9. The minister emphasised the need to ensure that all international students meet the country’s entry requirements, with qualifications verified through the new system.

The centralised system will use advanced algorithms and blockchain technology to enable instant verification of academic certificates. Zambry confirmed that the Ministry of Higher Education would collaborate with the home countries of applicants to ensure a smooth and secure admission process. The new initiative follows the Ministry’s broader efforts to enhance Malaysia’s position as a hub for international higher education.

The Malaysian Qualifications Agency currently handles the admissions process, but the minister pointed out that the new system would increase efficiency. A dedicated committee has already been formed to oversee the implementation of these changes.

Since 2012, Malaysia has been working to position itself as a top destination for international students, particularly from Asia. While the country’s original goal of hosting 200,000 international students by 2020 was disrupted by the pandemic, Malaysia is now aiming to welcome 250,000 students by 2025.

The rise in applications, particularly from East Asia, signals a growing interest in studying in Malaysia. In 2023, the country received 29,195 applications, a significant increase from 23,818 in 2022, with a notable surge from China. This new streamlined admissions system is expected to further enhance Malaysia’s appeal as an educational destination.
