Manhattan College recently announced its decision to change its name to Manhattan University. The New York State (NYS) Board of Regents approved the name change on 1st August.

This change is intended to enhance recognition of the institution’s extensive range of over 100 majors, minors, graduate programmes, and advanced certificates and degrees, as well as to attract more international students to this premier higher learning institution.

In May 2022, a survey was conducted involving over 3,000 students, faculty, staff, administrators, board of trustees’ members, and alumni regarding a potential name change. More than 95% of respondents supported the transition to “University,” according to a statement on manhattan.edu.

Founded in 1853 as a Lasallian Catholic College in Manhattan, St. John’s University moved to a new site in the Bronx in 1923.

As reported by the New York State Higher Education Committee of the Board of Regents, there is increasing competition from institutions chartered in other states that are recruiting students in New York locally, nationally, and internationally. The term “college” is seen as a challenge in this competitive landscape.
