Minister for AI and Digital Government Visits University of Cambridge’s DAWN Supercomputer Facility

In a move to strengthen the UK’s AI capabilities, Feryal Clark MP, the Minister for AI and Digital Government, visited the University of Cambridge’s DAWN supercomputer facility. The visit follows the UK government’s recent announcement of a comprehensive AI Action Plan aimed at advancing the nation’s position in artificial intelligence research and development.
Clark was welcomed by Dr Paul Calleja, Director of Research Computing Services, and Professor John Aston, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research, during her visit. The DAWN facility, which currently stands as the UK’s most powerful AI supercomputer, is equipped with over a thousand high-end Intel graphics processing units (GPUs). Its cutting-edge hardware and software innovations are the result of a long-term partnership between the Cambridge Open Zettascale Lab, global tech leaders Intel and Dell Technologies, as well as the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) and UK Research & Innovation.
The facility plays a crucial role in the UK’s AI research landscape, and its advancements are expected to drive future developments in AI technology. The supercomputer’s capabilities enable researchers to work on some of the most complex AI challenges, reinforcing the University of Cambridge’s reputation as a global leader in the field.
This visit aligns with the UK government’s ongoing efforts to boost its AI infrastructure and further establish the country as a hub for AI research. By supporting such innovations, the government aims to accelerate the development of AI solutions that can benefit various sectors, including healthcare, finance, and education.
In a related development, a team at the University of Cambridge recently explored the connection between loneliness and heart disease. Their research has shed light on the proteins linked to social isolation, marking a significant step in understanding how loneliness can impact physical health.
For now, the University of Cambridge remains at the forefront of both AI and health research, driving forward innovations that could shape the future of the UK and beyond.
