New Zealand’s international education sector has seen a remarkable 24% growth in student enrolment compared to last year, marking a strong recovery, according to Tertiary Education and Skills Minister Penny Simmonds.

From January to August 2024, New Zealand recorded 73,535 international enrolments, exceeding last year’s total in just two terms. The surge highlights the country’s global reputation for delivering high-quality education while significantly contributing to the local economy and communities.

Regional gains have been particularly noteworthy. According to the Education New Zealand (ENZ) report, Gisborne led with a 126% increase, followed by Marlborough at 45%, Hawke’s Bay at 28%, and Waikato at 26%. The report predicts further growth before the end of the year, adding to the positive outlook for the education sector.

Universities and schools have driven much of the recovery. University enrolments rose by 14% to 31,345 students, while schools reported a 33% increase, reaching 16,815 students. Primary schools saw the most significant jump, with a 69% rise in enrolments. Funded private training institutions also reported impressive growth of 80%.

While China and India remain key contributors, the report highlights increasing enrolments from other markets, including the US, Thailand, Germany, Sri Lanka, and the Philippines, each accounting for three per cent of international students.

Minister Simmonds stated, ‘Every funded part of the sector has seen growth this year, with universities now just seven per cent below pre-pandemic levels, reflecting the resilience and adaptability of New Zealand’s education providers.’

New Zealand’s robust international education sector not only enriches its campuses but also strengthens the economy, solidifying its place as a top destination for global learners.
