The University of Oxford has received a transformative £8.4 million gift from the Fondation Docteur Sadok Besrour to establish a new Centre and professorship dedicated to advancing global primary care. This generous donation will fund the creation of the Besrour Centre for Global Primary Care and the Dr Sadok Besrour Professorship of Global Primary Care, reinforcing the UK’s leadership in global health innovation.

The new Centre will be housed within the Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences, aiming to strengthen healthcare systems worldwide through research, training, and international collaboration.

Dr Sadok Besrour, the benefactor behind the donation, remarked, “Primary care is the foundation of health systems that truly serve people. I am honoured to support the Besrour Centre’s mission at Oxford and believe in the power of collaboration to achieve better health for all.”

Professor Irene Tracey CBE, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Oxford, welcomed the donation, stating, “This generous gift reflects our shared commitment to global health and equity. The Besrour Centre will be a key part of Oxford’s global health network, and we are grateful for Dr Besrour’s support.”

Echoing her sentiments, Professor Gavin Screaton, Head of Oxford’s Medical Sciences Division, said, “This new Centre will enhance Oxford’s leadership in primary care research and education. It represents a vital step in tackling challenges related to healthcare access and quality globally.”

The Centre will focus on delivering evidence-based, high-quality primary care solutions, particularly for low- and middle-income countries. The funding will support global research partnerships, fellowships for emerging healthcare leaders, policy engagement, and the hosting of an annual global forum to drive international collaboration.

As the UK continues to position itself as a leader in global health education and research, this milestone reinforces Oxford’s pivotal role in improving healthcare delivery systems around the world.
