PACE University in the United States has launched the Centre for Global Health, aiming to address chronic respiratory diseases (CRDs) and other global health challenges. CRDs, which cause 3.5 million deaths annually, will be the centre’s primary focus, along with communicable and non-communicable diseases.

The centre will drive advocacy, research, and education to raise awareness about CRDs, promote interdisciplinary research, and influence health policies worldwide. Leading the initiative is José Luis Castro ’88, World Health Organization (WHO) director-general special envoy for chronic respiratory diseases.

“Chronic respiratory diseases disproportionately impact vulnerable populations, yet they remain largely overlooked in health policy. Through research and advocacy, the Centre for Global Health will elevate this issue on the global stage while working with communities to develop sustainable solutions,” said Castro.

Sonia Suchday, Ph.D., director of research and graduate education, will also support the centre. She emphasised its role in addressing health, environmental, and social factors affecting respiratory diseases.

“This initiative will allow us to address the intersection of health, environment, and social determinants in a meaningful way. By fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, we can generate research that leads to actionable solutions for respiratory health challenges in urban settings,” Suchday said.

Jonathan H. Hill, interim provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at PACE University, highlighted the centre’s potential to shape future research and policy.

“The Centre for Global Health will provide new opportunities for our students and faculty to contribute to vital research and policy initiatives. By addressing chronic respiratory diseases and other chronic diseases at both the local and global levels, we are reinforcing PACE’s commitment to innovation and public impact,” he stated.

With expertise in biology, psychology, law, environmental sciences, and public health policy, the university is well-positioned to lead this initiative. The centre will also offer students hands-on learning experiences, including research assistantships, internships, and participation in high-level policy discussions, preparing them to tackle global health challenges.
