Rice University, a leading private university in the United States, has officially expanded its international footprint with the launch of Rice Global India, a new initiative aimed at fostering collaboration and advancing contributions to India’s growing education and technology sectors.

The expansion was marked by a ribbon-cutting ceremony on 18 November in Bengaluru, where the university laid the foundation for its formal operations in the region. During the event, Rice University’s team engaged with Priyank Kharge, Minister of Electronics, IT, Biotechnology, and Science & Technology for the Government of Karnataka, to explore potential partnerships to promote Global Capability Centres (GCC) in India.

As part of its strategic move, Rice is strengthening collaborations with prominent Indian institutions such as the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru. These partnerships will facilitate advanced research and foster exchanges in artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and sustainable energy.

Additionally, Rice University is introducing the Rice Excellence Scholarship, a ten-million-dollar initiative to support talented students from India. The scholarship, distributed over five years, covers eligible students’ tuition and living expenses and is awarded based on merit, with no separate application process required.

Rice University’s President, Reginald DesRoches, expressed enthusiasm about the opportunities in India, saying, “India is a country of tremendous opportunity, one where we see the potential to make a meaningful impact through collaboration in research, innovation, and education.” This expansion marks a significant milestone in strengthening ties between the US and India in higher education and technology.
