Rice University Unveils ‘Campus Within A Campus’ with New Architectural Developments

Rice University in the United States has announced a major renovation of its architecture facilities, unveiling William T. Cannady Hall and the revamped MD Anderson Hall as part of a sustainable “campus within a campus.” These new spaces are set to enhance architectural research, education, and public engagement at the School of Architecture.
Rice University President Reginald DesRoches expressed excitement about the expansion, stating, “This marks a new chapter for Rice, blending our architectural heritage with innovative design and sustainability. These new buildings will inspire students and faculty alike, symbolising our commitment to community and environmental stewardship.”
The newly renovated Cannady Hall, named after Professor Emeritus William T. Cannady, is a 22,000-square-foot facility designed to foster innovation. It will serve as a hub for research, fabrication, and exhibitions, providing spaces for public engagement and academic debate. Igor Marjanović, Dean of the School of Architecture, highlighted the building’s role in advancing the school’s mission, calling it “a catalyst for innovation.”
Both Cannady Hall and MD Anderson Hall prioritise sustainable design, with features like recyclable materials, an energy-efficient steel frame, and clerestory windows that reduce heat gain while maximising natural light. These eco-friendly strategies reflect Rice’s broader commitment to environmental responsibility in architecture.
The new developments are set to elevate the university’s architectural programme, offering a dynamic space for future generations of architects to explore and create. The expansion is a significant step forward for Rice University, reflecting its dedication to sustainability and architectural excellence.
