Rowan University’s Education Abroad Office is taking significant steps to ensure that studying abroad is accessible to all students, including those with disabilities. Historically, students with disabilities have encountered limited access to international study opportunities, often excluded from discussions due to perceived accessibility challenges. However, Rowan is actively working to break down these barriers and promote inclusivity in overseas education.

On 24 October, Rowan’s Education Abroad Office held an event in the Student Centre, spotlighting resources and strategies for students with disabilities who wish to study abroad. The assembly featured speakers from the Education Abroad Office, the Office of Accessibility Services, and industry experts like Michelle Vallero, a travel adviser specialising in disability accommodations.

Vallero, the founder of Varello Infinite Journeys, emphasised the importance of planning to ensure essential accommodations are available when travelling. “Making sure you have the right accommodations is crucial… You’re leaving the comfort of your home, so planning ensures your needs are met,” she advised.

Education Abroad adviser Laura Kahler encouraged students to pursue international experiences despite potential challenges, stating, “Even with struggles, there’s beauty and growth in studying abroad.” Rowan’s Education Abroad Office is partnering with providers who specialise in accessibility to create inclusive programmes, allowing students with disabilities to explore the world confidently.
