In a significant move for aspiring Indian medical students, Russia has increased the number of medical education seats for international students by 2,000, bringing the total to 10,000 for the year 2024. The announcement was made by Valerii Khodzhaev, Consul General of the Russian Federation in Chennai, at an event held in the city.

The expansion reflects the rising number of Indian students choosing Russia as their destination for quality and affordable medical education. Russia remains the only foreign country fully compliant with the National Medical Commission (NMC) of India’s latest regulations on overseas medical education, making it a preferred and reliable choice for Indian students.

“Students from India have been studying in Russian universities for the past 60 years. Russia continues to be the top choice due to its globally recognised curriculum, advanced infrastructure, and experienced faculty,” said Khodzhaev.

Highlighting ongoing bilateral cooperation in education, Russian House Vice Consul Alexander Dodonov announced that 200 Indian students will receive 100% scholarships from the Russian government this year. These grants will cover bachelor’s, master’s, specialist, and postgraduate programmes across leading Russian institutions.

To further promote academic opportunities, an All-India Russian Education Fair for the 2025–26 academic year will be hosted on 10 and 11 May at the Russian Centre of Science and Culture in Chennai. Similar events will be held in Coimbatore, Salem, and Tiruchirappalli.

The fair will showcase top Russian universities, including Volgograd State Medical University, Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University, Kazan State Medical University, National Research Nuclear University, and Moscow Aviation Institute. The event will also spotlight programmes in emerging fields like biotechnology, artificial intelligence, and data science.

This development not only strengthens India-Russia educational ties but also offers Indian students enhanced access to globally respected medical qualifications.
