Stephen F. Austin State University (SFA) has announced that nine of its students have received prestigious scholarships to support their upcoming study abroad journeys. The awards will enable these students to travel across the globe, engaging in immersive academic, cultural, and research experiences.

Among the recipients is Kimberly Birrer, a graduate student pursuing a Master of Science in Forestry, who has been awarded the David L. Boren Fellowship under the National Security Education Program. The $12,500 scholarship will support her upcoming research trip to Brasília, Brazil.

“This funding opens an incredible opportunity for me to learn Portuguese and collaborate on conservation research,” said Birrer. “My goal is to work on large-scale, cross-border conservation projects that bridge cultural and political divides.”

Two more SFA students, Emily Bautista-Moran and Andrea Horton, will also travel to Brazil through a faculty-led programme in Bahia. Bautista-Moran, majoring in international and intercultural communication, received a $3,000 scholarship, while Horton, a junior in the nursing programme, earned $6,000.

“Studying abroad is more than just travel,” said Horton. “It’s a transformative experience that allows me to grow professionally and understand healthcare in a new cultural context.”

Heather Catton, Director of SFA’s Office of International Programs, said the scholarships not only open doors for individual students but also enhance the university community. “These scholarships make international experiences more accessible and encourage cultural exchange, academic growth, and personal development. Their journeys will also enrich our campus upon their return.”

The recognition highlights the United States’ ongoing commitment to international education and the value of global learning experiences. These scholarships provide financial support to students who might not otherwise afford such opportunities, fostering international collaboration and understanding.

With destinations including Brazil and others yet to be announced, the students from Stephen F. Austin State University are preparing to represent their university — and the United States — on a global stage.
