Thailand Visa Rules: Expands Visa-free Status to 93 Countries

The Thai government has recently made several changes to Thailand’s visa policies. The modifications are to increase the period spent in the country by paving the way for ease of travellers. It is a significant shift in the Thai visa requirements that was discussed during a cabinet meeting in May 2024*.

Recently in Thailand, the cabinet was meeting to address issues affecting the Thai economy and some of the solutions that would be implemented included. When deciding on a stimulus package, to improve travel to the country, there was a decision made that visa requirements should be relaxed.

Here are the changes in the Visa Rules:

  • The visa exemption period is extended from 30 days to 60 days.
  • Visitors from 93 countries are covered by the visa exemption.
  • The cabinet also introduced a new visa category named as Destination Thailand Visa (DTV)
  • Visitors are extended from 19 to 31 countries are covered in the Visa on arrival (VOA)
  • DTV is designed for travellers, freelancers, and anybody involved in various activities such as Martial arts, Muay Thai, cooking, medical, Business & Education seminars, and Music & Art events.
  • DTV will enable one to stay up to 180 days and in certain circumstances where one proves that he or she has adequate finances one can stay for a further 180 days.
  • Proposal to make more e-visas available to enable citizens of more nations to obtain their visas electronically in their home countries. E-visas would be issued from 94 Thai embassies and consulates as against 47 currently.
