Two students from Troy University, USA, have been selected for the highly competitive Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, granting them the opportunity to study abroad and gain transformative international experience.

Audrey Bell, a junior majoring in exercise physiology and pre-health professions from Alexander City, Alabama, will spend the Spring 2026 semester at the University of Worcester in England. For Bell, the scholarship realises a long-standing aspiration to immerse herself in a different culture while continuing her academic progress.

“I’ve always wanted to study abroad, and thanks to the Gilman Scholarship, I now have the opportunity,” she said.

During her time in the UK, Bell will undertake courses in microbiology, exercise science, and creative writing, many of which align with her degree requirements at Troy. In addition to her studies, she will volunteer with local organisations including Worcester Cathedral and The Hive—Europe’s largest children’s library—further enriching her cultural experience.

Fellow recipient Elijah Brooks, a junior psychology student from Luverne, Alabama, also secured the scholarship. He described the Gilman application process as structured and accessible, comprising three essays: a personal statement, a community impact plan, and a reflection on building mutual understanding.

Brooks encouraged future applicants to approach the process with sincerity and purpose. “Let your tone be professional but also passionate—that’s what really stands out,” he advised.

Administered by the Institute of International Education, the Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship supports American undergraduate students with limited financial means to study or intern abroad. To qualify, applicants must be Federal Pell Grant recipients and demonstrate a strong academic and cross-cultural commitment.

By choosing destinations such as England, students like Bell and Brooks are not only expanding their educational horizons but also fostering mutual understanding and cultural exchange between the United States and the United Kingdom.
