India has secured a prominent position in the first-ever Times Higher Education (THE) Online Learning Rankings 2024, with two universities earning the prestigious ‘gold’ status. The rankings, released on 10 December, grouped institutions into gold, silver, and bronze categories, highlighting excellence in online education worldwide.

The two Indian universities in the gold category are Manav Rachna International Institute of Research and Studies and O.P. Jindal Global University. Notably, Manav Rachna emerged as the most consistent performer among the gold recipients, being the only university to score above 60 across all four key pillars: resources, engagement, outcomes, and environment. O.P. Jindal Global University also excelled, achieving the best outcomes score among all gold-status universities.

The rankings include 11 universities in the gold category, with two from India, three from the United States, two from the United Kingdom, and one each from Russia, Hungary, New Zealand, and Australia.

India’s Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences secured a spot in the silver category, while four Indian universities — Amity University (Noida), KL University, Lovely Professional University (LPU), and Manipal University (Jaipur) — were listed in the bronze category.

The pilot edition of THE’s Online Learning Rankings evaluated universities using 17 metrics under four pillars: resources, engagement, outcomes, and environment. This initiative measured universities’ online learning performance, ensuring that at least 40% of course content is delivered online.

India’s strong showing in these rankings highlights its growing prominence in online education and its commitment to providing high-quality learning experiences globally.
