The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is stepping up efforts to attract Chinese students by positioning itself as a premier regional hub for higher education. A high-level delegation of UAE education and political leaders showcased the country’s offerings at the China International Education Exhibition Tour (CIEET) held in Beijing earlier this month.

Led by Dubai’s Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA), the delegation included representatives from Dubai Knowledge Park, Dubai International Academics City, Dubai Chambers, and the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET). Their goal: to present the UAE, and particularly Dubai, as a compelling alternative to traditional study destinations like the UK, US, Canada, and Australia.

Mark Brown, General Manager of Murdoch University Dubai, highlighted the UAE’s existing Chinese population of over 40,000 — many of whom initially came for business but are now increasingly exploring academic opportunities.

“There’s growing interest from Chinese students looking to study in the UAE due to its reputation for safety, innovation, and career prospects,” Brown said. “Dubai offers the chance to earn an internationally recognised degree in one of the world’s most dynamic, multicultural cities.”

Murdoch University Dubai, an Australian institution, has been actively engaging with the Chinese market as part of its ongoing collaboration through the KHDA-led Study Dubai roadshow. Brown noted that the UAE combines quality education, lifestyle benefits, and future-focused career pathways — all major draw cards for Chinese students.

With Chinese students traditionally favouring countries like Australia and the US, the UAE is working to carve out a niche by promoting its strengths in innovation, entrepreneurship, and transnational education. The recent trip reinforces Dubai’s long-term commitment to expanding educational ties with China.

As international competition for students intensifies, the UAE’s proactive engagement highlights its ambition to become a global education destination, with China firmly in its sights.
