In a significant boost to India’s higher education landscape, the University of York (UK) and the University of Western Australia (UWA) have announced plans to open campuses in Mumbai. The move strengthens India’s growing academic ties with both the United Kingdom and Australia, reflecting rising transnational education collaborations.

The announcements were made during the World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit (WAVES), held at the Jio World Centre in Mumbai. Organised by India’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the summit served as a platform for global education leaders to explore new partnerships.

The University of York will become the sixth UK university—and the fourth from the elite Russell Group—to set up a campus in India. Scheduled to open for the 2026/27 academic year, York’s Mumbai campus will offer undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in computer science (AI and cybersecurity), business, economics, and creative industries. The institution aims to embed research deeply into teaching, focusing on future technologies, environmental change, and food security.

Speaking on the development, Professor Charlie Jeffery, Vice-Chancellor of York, stated, “We’re taking our values-driven approach to India, working with a country that has an ambitious drive for global influence, skills development and economic growth.”

Meanwhile, UWA, a Group of Eight (Go8) university, will be the first Australian institution of its kind to launch a campus in India. The new campus is expected to offer courses in STEM, business, and creative arts, including from the UWA Conservatorium of Music. Although a launch date is yet to be confirmed, students will have the option to transfer between the India and Perth campuses.

UWA Chancellor Diane Smith-Gander praised India’s policy reforms, saying, “India was the country that had the foresight to change its policy settings. It feels to me that this was just meant to be.”

Both universities are currently seeking final approvals from the University Grants Commission (UGC). Their arrival marks a new chapter in global education partnerships with India, positioning Mumbai as an emerging hub for world-class academic exchange.
