The University of Michigan (U-M) has been ranked as the number one public university in the United States for global learning experiences by the Institute of International Education, a New York-based nonprofit organisation. Overall, U-M holds the second position among all universities nationwide for study abroad programmes.

Valeria Bertacco, U-M’s Vice Provost for Engaged Learning, celebrated the recognition, stating, “To be ranked the No. 1 public university and No. 2 in the nation for education abroad is a testament to our commitment to providing students with ample and diverse opportunities to engage globally… These transformational journeys highlight the importance of international experiences.”

During the 2022-23 academic year, 3,340 U-M students participated in study abroad programmes, marking a 70% increase from the previous year. Students travelled to 124 countries, including France, Italy, and Spain, showcasing the university’s robust global engagement.

U-M Students Experience China’s Dance Culture

Five students from U-M’s School of Music, Theatre & Dance visited China in the summer of 2023 for a dance exchange programme. They spent 10 days immersing themselves in Chinese culture, performing and learning diverse dance techniques.

Dance major Robert Farr-Jones reflected on the experience, saying, “Being fully immersed in a different culture was enlightening. I incorporated varied teaching styles into my work back home.” Fellow student Rileigh Goldsmith added, “Through movement, we connected across language barriers, immersing ourselves in a foreign arts culture.”

Exploring AI for Strategic Decisions

Separately, a study led by Felipe Csaszar, a professor at U-M’s Ross School of Business, explored how artificial intelligence (AI) can assist in strategic decision-making. Csaszar emphasised the importance of AI safety and its potential to democratise access to services like personalised education, which traditionally relied on costly human tutors.
The University of Michigan continues to lead in fostering global and technological innovation, cementing its position as a top choice for students worldwide.
