The University of Southampton in England is all set to enrol 10,000 students at its upcoming campus in Gurugram, India, beginning next year. The university aims to attract top-tier Indian students who miss out on spots in prestigious institutes like IITs, IIMs and ISB, offering them an alternative to studying abroad.

Oxford International Education is collaborating with the university to establish the campus. Lil Bremermann-Richard, Group CEO of Oxford International Education, highlighted the demand for high-quality education in India. ‘India has a huge young population seeking premium tertiary education. The Indian government’s openness to foreign universities creates an excellent opportunity,’ she said.

Recent immigration restrictions in countries like Canada, Australia and the UK are expected to increase enrolment at the Gurugram campus. Factors like family commitments, rising inflation, and increasing tuition abroad are pushing students to seek affordable, high-quality education within India. Bremermann-Richard noted that the programmes will be 40% cheaper than studying overseas.
The Gurugram campus will initially offer two master’s and four undergraduate programmes, focusing on engineering and management. The university plans to start small, admitting about 200 students in the first year, with the ambition to scale up to 10,000 students annually within a decade.

To ensure academic quality, the University of Southampton plans to bring in foreign faculty, particularly from the UK, while gradually balancing local and international talent.

Meanwhile, the University of Southampton’s Global Legal Clinic in the UK has earned national recognition. The clinic, offering free legal advice to the community, has been shortlisted for the National LawWorks Pro Bono Awards 2024. Legal Director Dr Omar Madhloom described it as a proud achievement, showcasing the university’s commitment to community engagement and student development.
