St Andrews, Scotland: The University of St Andrews has been awarded £5 million by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) under the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) initiative to support doctoral students tackling global environmental challenges.

Led by Dr Chris Sutherland from the School of Mathematics and Statistics, the funding will support the NETGAIN programme, which aims to address critical training needs and bridge knowledge gaps in environmental science. The programme emphasises multidisciplinary collaboration and industry partnerships to develop innovative solutions and promote sustainable practices.

“Our vision integrates diverse perspectives to design and implement nature markets for a net positive future,” said Dr Sutherland. “NETGAIN will directly contribute to healthy, resilient environments and societies through practical applications.”

This funding is part of a broader UKRI effort to nurture research talent and foster innovation. UKRI’s Chief Executive, Professor Dame Ottoline Leyser, emphasised the importance of such investments, stating, “These awards are pivotal for building partnerships, driving discoveries, and delivering diverse societal and economic benefits.”

The £5 million investment will fund at least 36 PhD studentships across the University of St Andrews, as well as Durham, Aberdeen, and Glasgow universities, ensuring the next generation of researchers is equipped to tackle pressing ecological challenges.

In related research, St Andrews experts have also made a groundbreaking discovery that the historic “King Arthur’s Hall” in Cornwall is 4,000 years older than previously believed, further showcasing the university’s contributions to environmental and historical studies.
