University of Utah Secures $75 Million for New State-of-the-Art Hospital

The University of Utah, United States, has received a monumental $75 million grant from the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation to build an 800,000-square-foot hospital and medical campus in West Valley City. The project, set to begin construction this summer, is expected to be completed by 2028.
This funding marks a significant step in expanding healthcare access across Utah. Taylor Randall, President of the University of Utah, highlighted the Eccles family’s longstanding contributions to healthcare and medical education in the state. “For 60 years, the Eccles family has offered both unwavering leadership and financial support for excellence in healthcare throughout Utah,” he said.
New Hospital to Enhance Medical Services and Job Growth
The new University of Utah hospital will feature 90 inpatient beds and 200 exam rooms, offering multi-specialty outpatient clinics, including orthopaedics, heart care, paediatrics, women’s health, and urgent care. In addition to improving healthcare services, the facility will create over 2,000 new jobs in the West Valley area.
Bob Carter, CEO of University of Utah Health, emphasised the hospital’s role in addressing the region’s healthcare needs. “Currently, westside residents drive more than 12 million miles per year to access U of U Health services. This new campus will bring comprehensive, top-tier healthcare closer to home,” he said.
The initiative also aims to expand medical education opportunities, addressing Utah’s shortage of doctors, which is reportedly five times greater in western Salt Lake County compared to other regions along the Wasatch Front.
With the support of the Eccles Foundation, the University of Utah is poised to transform healthcare accessibility, ensuring high-quality medical services reach more communities across the state.
