UNSW Sydney has introduced an international admissions waitlist and merit-based offer rounds for 2025, anticipating the Australian government’s cap on international student enrolments. This cap, outlined in the pending ESOS Amendment Bill 2024, aims to control international student numbers, affecting institutions like UNSW, which have seen soaring demand.

A university spokesperson highlighted UNSW’s popularity, citing its recent rise to 19th in the QS World University Rankings for 2024 and 2025. To avoid exceeding its allocated New Overseas Student Commencements (NOSC) limit of 9,500—a 14% reduction from 2023—UNSW will progressively release offers based on program availability and student merit.

This decision follows similar actions taken by Australian Catholic University, which paused 2025 international recruitment after reaching its enrolment limit. With high demand for Australian education and the likelihood of the bill passing in January 2025, institutions are seeking ways to manage incoming applications responsibly.

The ESOS Amendment Bill, awaiting Senate debate with discussions likely on November 18, would set enrolment caps to take effect next year. At the recent Australian International Education Conference in Melbourne, Phil Honeywood, CEO of the International Education Association of Australia, advocated for a 15% buffer in the cap’s first year to ease the adjustment for universities.

UNSW remains committed to its international community, recognising the integral role of overseas students in enriching the campus experience.
