Andhra Pradesh, India – Over 50,000 secondary school students from Andhra Pradesh have participated in the University of Melbourne’s Schools Engagement Programme, a career development initiative aimed at underrepresented students.

Initially launched in Madurai and Pune, the programme expanded to more than 100 government schools across five districts in Andhra Pradesh by 2023. It focuses on enhancing students’ career planning, social mobility, and understanding of labour markets.

Speaking about the initiative, Professor Michael Wesley, Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the University of Melbourne, highlighted India’s vast student population, stating, “Empowering tens of thousands of young students through this programme enriches academic capabilities in India and extends opportunities for global impact.”

Local government officials have also praised the programme’s timely approach. Dinesh Kumar, IAS, District Magistrate of Alluri Sitharama Raju District, remarked, “Timely intervention is essential to harness India’s demographic dividend. Missing this opportunity could have global repercussions as India stands poised to export skills and talent.”

Teachers involved in the programme have reported significant improvements in students’ confidence and decision-making abilities. One teacher commented, “This programme has made students more self-reliant and responsible in selecting their career paths.”

Students echoed these sentiments, with one saying, “I had no clear vision of my future, but this programme helped me discover my passions and how to turn them into a career.”

In a related announcement, Jane Hansen AO was officially installed as the 23rd Chancellor of the University of Melbourne by the Governor of Victoria. She reaffirmed her commitment to academia and advancing the university’s mission.

This initiative highlights Australia’s growing engagement with India’s educational landscape, marking a collaborative step forward for both nations.
