Pace University in the United States has launched the Gale Epstein Centre for Environment, Policy, and Technology. The centre, established through a philanthropic gift from business leader Gale Epstein, aims to safeguard the public’s right to environmental information.

The centre’s focus will include real-time environmental sensing, warning systems, and a nationwide alert system to protect communities from unsafe drinking water, potentially saving millions from preventable illnesses.

Pace University President Marvin Krislov highlighted the importance of technology and policy in tackling environmental challenges, stating: “Sustainability will only be achieved if communities can make informed decisions about their health and environment based on real-time information. We are deeply grateful to Ms Epstein for empowering Pace to carry out this mission.”

Gale Epstein explained her vision for the initiative: “I chose Pace University because of our shared commitment to protecting the human and natural environment. In this time of unprecedented threats, from climate change to microplastics, we must train a new generation of professionals with the information essential for meaningful change.”

The centre also aims to equip students and faculty with tools to develop solutions for pressing environmental challenges. Interim Provost Jonathan Hill remarked: “The Gale Epstein Centre will provide our community with resources to address critical environmental issues, expanding Pace’s commitment to sustainability and innovation.”

Additionally, Pace University recently secured a $476,000 grant from the Mellon Foundation for a project titled “Islands, Archipelagos, and Cultural Ecologies”. The initiative will advance environmental justice and humanities. President Krislov noted: “This grant allows Pace to bridge environmental sciences and humanities, addressing urgent global issues.”

With the Gale Epstein Centre and recent grants, Pace University reinforces its leadership in sustainability and environmental innovation in the United States.
