London Metropolitan University has appointed Sanam Arora, chair of the National Indian Students and Alumni Union (NISAU) UK, to its board of governors, marking a significant milestone in British higher education governance. Arora becomes the youngest independent governor on the board and one of the few young Indian diaspora leaders to hold such a role in the UK’s university sector.

Celebrating the appointment, Arora stated: “London Met’s values – of equity, opportunity, and transformation – resonate deeply with me. I’m honoured to support this wonderful university.”

The university highlighted Arora’s extensive contributions to UK international education policy, especially her leadership in reinstating the UK Graduate Route visa, now benefiting thousands of international students and institutions across the country.

Alongside her role at NISAU, Arora serves as a commissioner on the UK’s International Higher Education Commission, influencing future policy and participating in major initiatives like the India UK Education Conference and Achievers Honours in partnership with the UK government.

Tijs Broeke, chair of the board of governors, welcomed the appointment, saying, “Sanam brings a wealth of experience that aligns perfectly with London Met’s mission. Her leadership and advocacy for international students complements our ambition to be a truly global and welcoming university.”

A graduate of the London School of Economics, Arora also brings over a decade of corporate finance experience, advising global investment houses on regulatory, strategic, and consumer protection matters.

Her contributions have been widely recognised — she was named one of the 50 Most Influential Voices in Global Education by The PIE in 2023 and received the PIEoneer Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Higher Education Industry.

London Metropolitan University sees Arora’s appointment as a step forward in enhancing its commitment to inclusion, diversity, and global engagement within the UK higher education landscape.
