American Field Service Intercultural Programs has launched a new youth scholarship in Africa, expanding on an existing project that provides training for teachers. The new Youth Assembly Impact Programme will support 10 young leaders from Africa through individual mentorship and funding for sustainable development projects within their communities.

Africa boasts a youthful population, yet the enrolment of African students in higher education institutions globally remains low. “With such initiatives in high schools and colleges, backed by AIFS and the Cyril Taylor Charitable Foundation, we aim to raise awareness and promote timely scholarships,” said William Gertz, AIFS Chairman and trustee of the Cyril Taylor Charitable Foundation.

The seven female scholars, aged between 18 and 32, will also attend the 2025 AFS Youth Assembly, which will focus on emergency preparedness and response, food security, and sustainability.
“There is still time to become active global citizens—individuals working towards a better, more just, equitable, peaceful, and sustainable world,” Gertz added.

“Responses to initiatives like this scholarship for young leaders and teachers worldwide help cultivate more engaged global citizens,” stated Daniel Obst, President and CEO of AFS Intercultural Programs.

The new programme is funded by the Cyril Taylor Charitable Foundation and also supports the growth of AFS’s Effect+ in the Classroom Programme, which offers 300 teacher scholarships internationally.

This virtual approach empowers high school teachers with tools to engage students as active participants in global citizenship, enabling them to contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals both in and out of the classroom, according to Obst.

The programme has already enrolled 1,000 educators from over 500 schools in 65 countries, all of whom have obtained the AFS Global Competence Certificate.
The best community-based social impact projects developed by students in the classrooms of participating teachers will be recognised with the Sir Cyril Taylor Young Leaders Awards.
