Fraudulent IELTS scores in Pakistan have become a growing concern, threatening the country’s reputation as a key source of international students. A recent post by a career counsellor at The City School in Islamabad highlighted how certain agencies and agents are circulating fake IELTS results, undermining the integrity of the student mobility process.

With over 103,000 Pakistani students studying abroad in 2022, many opt for the UK, Australia, and the UAE as their preferred destinations. However, a rising number of students are reportedly turning to unethical agents who promise inflated IELTS scores. Kousar Sharif, Director at Nextage Institute, revealed that agents charge hefty fees, with some even sending candidates abroad for manipulated speaking tests.

Such practices not only mislead institutions about a student’s true English proficiency but also expose students to potential academic struggles once enrolled. Dr Osamah Qureshi, Director at Ireland Education Office, noted that “managed tests,” where imposters take the exam on behalf of students, have become increasingly common, especially in UK-bound applications.

The issue has escalated to the point where exam materials are sometimes leaked, potentially allowing Pakistani students to access answers before exams. While this malpractice has led to temporary bans in the past, it now results in the permanent disqualification of test results.

The IELTS body has taken steps to address these issues, advising universities to verify scores through their official services. As the demand for study abroad opportunities continues to rise, stakeholders urge the government and test providers to tighten regulations and ensure fair practices in Pakistan’s growing study abroad sector.
