In a significant step towards strengthening its global academic footprint, Egypt has entered into 12 co-operation agreements with the University of Louisville in the United States. The agreements, signed by a consortium of Egyptian universities, aim to internationalise Egypt’s higher education system and offer globally recognised academic pathways to Egyptian students.

The signing ceremony was attended virtually by Egypt’s Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Dr Mohamed Ayman Ashour, and Catherine Cardarelli, representative of the University of Louisville, alongside senior officials from the 12 participating institutions.

“This collaboration marks a progressive step toward achieving a globally competitive academic environment in Egypt,” Ashour said. “We aim to see this model replicated across more disciplines and universities.”

The partnership centres on a specialised Master of Science in Engineering programme. As per the agreement, students will undertake six credit hours at their home universities in Egypt, followed by 24 credit hours at the University of Louisville in Kentucky, USA. While the programme does not result in a joint or dual degree, it is designed to adhere to international academic standards and offers students a streamlined and high-quality path to postgraduate education.

The 12 Egyptian universities involved include Alexandria University, Assiut University, Mansoura University, Minufiya University, Benha University, Alamein International University, New Mansoura University, Alexandria National University, Assiut National University, Mansoura National University, Menoufia National University, and Benha National University.

This academic initiative aligns with Egypt’s National Strategy for Higher Education and Scientific Research, which prioritises global collaboration and integration of international academic practices. The move also strengthens Egypt’s longstanding ties with the US in the education sector, particularly through support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

The University of Louisville, already familiar with Egyptian academic frameworks, has played host to numerous Egyptian scholars and students over the years. This new programme is expected not only to upgrade the professional competencies of Egyptian engineering graduates but also to lay the groundwork for further interdisciplinary partnerships in the future.
