Harvard University, Massachusetts, USA has unveiled a major expansion of its financial aid programme, offering free tuition to undergraduate students from families earning $200,000 or less per year. The new policy will take effect from the fall 2025 semester, significantly widening access to one of the world’s most prestigious institutions.

Previously, Harvard provided full tuition coverage only for families earning up to $85,000 annually. Under the revised scheme, students from families earning $100,000 or less will have all their billed expenses—including tuition, housing, meals, travel, and health insurance—completely covered. Additionally, they will receive a $2,000 start-up grant in their first year and a $2,000 launch grant in their junior year.

“This investment in financial aid aims to make a Harvard College education possible for every admitted student, so they can pursue their academic passions and positively impact our future,” said Hopi Hoekstra, Edgerley Family Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.

The move positions Harvard as a leader in higher education accessibility in the United States. The university estimates that nearly 86% of American households will now qualify for tuition-free education under this new framework.

Jake Kaufmann, Griffin Director of Financial Aid, highlighted the university’s commitment to ensuring that students can fully participate in the Harvard experience without financial burdens. “Our team works closely with each student to ensure full inclusion,” he stated.

Harvard University President Alan M. Garber emphasised the broader impact of the decision, saying, “Putting Harvard within financial reach for more individuals widens the array of backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives that all of our students encounter, fostering their intellectual and personal growth.”

While the expansion of financial aid is a significant step forward, experts note the substantial cost of such programmes. Harvard Kennedy School professor David J. Deming acknowledged the financial challenges but affirmed the importance of maintaining Harvard’s global appeal by attracting top talent regardless of economic background.

With this bold initiative, Harvard University is reinforcing its commitment to academic excellence and inclusivity, ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder talented students from accessing a world-class education.
